Mistletoe

One of the most exciting things you can do with mistletoe is take it up and put it down. There are several different holiday traditions involving putting up different ornaments and enjoying the company of friends and family as you do so. Christmas trees fall under this category of thinking about the holidays, and the addition of mistletoe is quite common.

There is an ancient Scandinavian tradition which involves the kissing that is the stereotypical impression of the substance. In reality, mistletoe is actually a harmful parasite which can fight its way under the bark of trees and other plants to gather minerals and water. On specific type of the herb grows within the plant, a cactus, and eventually works its way out from within.

Usually the plant infests itself in the European countries and in the desert regions where it needs the water quite badly. Mistletoe will quickly insert itself into the bark in order to obtain the minerals mentioned earlier. After this, since they are hemiparasitic, they will grow out away from the tree and attempt to gain their own sunlight to grow like a normal plant.
